SPIRAL 3--THE DARK SIDE

Somewhere in Montana Sunday, August 13th, 1990

6:11pm

I heard this place has a great burger so I’m checking it out. I walk in and take a stool at the counter. It's empty. Looking at the menu on the display overhead it doesn’t take me long to find something I like. “I’ll have the barbeque bacon double burger with an extra large Dr Pepper and chili cheese fries. I’ll take a slice of that banana cream pie too”.

“Coming up”.

As I was waiting for my food I saw the news on the television. “Excuse me, but can you please turn up the volume? Thank You”.

“Sure thing”.

“In other news tonight the person who calls himself the Death of Abusers Killer (the DOA Killer for short) is still on the loose. The police and the FBI are still looking at Max Wilks who they say killed 49 people in 4 states over the last 10 months”.

It looks like they haven’t found the others yet. I have a little time here.

“As you may have already heard Max Wilks disappeared 19 days after the first person was killed on Halloween night back in 1989. Friends say that Max fell into a deep depression after his wife was shot by her ex-boyfriend, who was stalking her, just as Max was about to kiss her on the altar. Friends say that he started drinking heavily and became very antisocial.

Police first suspected Max when he reportedly beat a Portland, Oregon native after he apparently witnessed the man striking a woman later found out to be his wife. The man suffered 19 broken bones including 3 in his face. Max supposedly apologized to the woman for the other man’s conduct and kissed her on the cheek. Then witnesses say he left on his custom motor bike which has a very distinctive mid-evil theme about it.

He is described as 6-0, 195 lbs. with short brown hair and a tattoo of the Oakland Raiders logo on his right arm. Officials say he might have changed his appearance by growing a beard or shaving his head.”

What about wearing a wig and gaining 20 lbs. Fools.

“Officials are looking for any information on the where a bouts of the DOA killer. If you see him remember don’t try to approach him. Call local authorities. He is considered to be armed and extremely dangerous.”

“Hear you go”. She sets the burger and fries down"

“Thank You Ms”. Stopping for a moment I bend down and take a deep sniff of the food. “This smells real good. I heard it was the best burger around here.

“Best burger in the whole state of Montana”.

I pick up the burger and am about to take a bite. “Pretty bad isn’t it? The DOA Killer I mean”. Sinking my teeth in I get a mouthful of what I soon believe is heaven. She wasn’t exaggerating.

“Oh, yeah I guess. I mean the guy shouldn’t be doing it, but so far he’s just killin’ the ones that are beatin’ women.

Interesting. Wiping my chin I manage a slightly muffled “Does that mean you’re not afraid of him”?

“Not as afraid as if he was out killin’ women and, quote, innocent people. The police should thank him if you ask me”.

“I suppose”. As I’m enjoying my meal I spot my next target.

A couple walk in and sit at a table in the corner. If you didn’t know better you wouldn’t suspect anything. I know better.

The woman is following behind with sun glasses on. It’s been cloudy all. She isn’t looking up at all. Her head is slightly down. She wants to go unnoticed. Nice sweater. It’s August and the temperature is in the high 70’s. He points to a chair and she sits down even though she wanted another chair. When the waitress takes their order, she orders but he asks her “Do you really want that”? His tone was such that he really wasn’t asking her, he was telling her.

The waitress comes back over and mumbles that she wishes the DOA Killer was here.

He is here. She will be free tonight.

Before they get their food then man starts to act disgusted with her. Talking in a low harsh tone he starts putting her down, telling her how worthless she is. He decides that she will wait in the car while he eats. She gets up and goes to the car humiliated, degregated, and defeated.

I look at the waitress and call her over. “2 things honey. 1st. you might want to cancel his order. 2nd. be careful what you wish for”.

She just looks at me not knowing what to make of it. Our eyes lock with a serious look on my face. I get up and open my trench coat just enough for her to see my gun. Her eyes get a little wide with recognition. Her mouth opens a little. With hatred for who he is and what his kind does, I make my way over to the deceased.

He turns his head and looks at me. Just as I am almost there he asks me what my problem is. Our eyes never leave each other. In a sarcastic low tone I speak.

“Congratulations. You just found the DOA Killer”.
